  During the women’s interview segment of this year’s thematic sharing session—“Striving in the New Era, Building the Chinese Dream”—held to mark the 67th anniversary of the establishment of the General Administration, Yin Xiuzhen from the Shandong Institute left a lasting impression. She is a “Model Worker” for the period 2018–2019, an “Outstanding Individual” in scientific and technological innovation within the Administration, and the sole recipient of the Special Prize for Geological Science and Technology Progress for the 2017–2019 term.

  With a chic bob and a simple white blouse paired with a black skirt, she recounted the arduous journey of innovation her team and she had undertaken, along with their achievements. The gentle, confident smile that appeared on her face only deepened everyone’s admiration for this capable, modern‑era geologist.

  Those who know Yin Xiuzhen well understand that these honors are entirely deserved. As the deputy director and chief engineer of the Resources and Environment (Geological Disaster) Division at Shandong Institute, she has in recent years spearheaded technological innovation, guiding her team to seize the opportunities presented by the geological industry’s transformation. By creatively applying traditional geological exploration expertise to the field of riverbed sediment investigation, she developed a rigorous and comprehensive methodology for assessing riverbed sediments, giving Shandong Institute a distinct competitive edge in the provincial market. The institute won contracts to undertake surveys for eight of the nine pilot river sections designated for pollution remediation in Shandong Province, with the results from six of those projects recognized as outstanding. Building on these riverbed‑sediment projects, Yin Xiuzhen led her team in publishing two technical papers; securing five nationally authorized utility‑model patents and having one additional patent application pending; and receiving one award among the province’s Top Ten Outstanding Geological Achievements, two Land and Resources Science and Technology Awards (First and Second Prizes), two Geological Science and Technology Progress Awards from the General Administration (Special Prize and First Prize), and one Geological Exploration and Resource Development Science and Technology Award (Third Prize).   A Difficult Path of Innovation: Steadfast Pursuit of Truth and Breakthroughs

  The path of innovation is fraught with challenges. To be the first to “eat the crab” requires not only the courage to take risks and explore uncharted territory, but also the unwavering determination and resilience to face failure, get back up, and keep moving forward. Having worked in the geological industry for more than a decade, Yin Xiuzhen is well aware of this truth—but she has nonetheless chosen, without hesitation, this road of innovation, which is both difficult and full of the unknown.

  In 2015, Yin Xiuzhen led her team in enthusiastically responding to the Shandong Institute’s call to expand into the field of environmental geology, and they began working on river‑bed sediment distribution surveys. At the time, such surveys represented an emerging area characterized by a “three‑no” situation: no established standards, no industry guidelines, and no readily available experience to draw upon. Relying on a spirit of “crossing the river by feeling for stones,” Yin Xiuzhen boldly embraced innovation, seamlessly integrating geological exploration expertise with ecological restoration. Under her leadership, her team overcame one technical challenge after another, achieving significant and impactful breakthroughs.

  Recalling those early days, Yin Xiuzhen jokingly describes their routine as “training in the depths of winter and under the scorching summer sun”—in winter, they conduct observations at the river’s estuary, where the biting winds make even thick down jackets ineffective, leaving their hands and feet numb with cold after only a short while. In summer, under the blazing sun, the riverbed—bereft of shade—turns into a sweltering steamer, drenching them in sweat while forcing them to endure the acrid, pungent odor of polluted water. Yet even under such conditions, determined to gather reliable, first-hand data, Yin Xiuzhen and her team pressed on despite the challenges. During fieldwork, they often spent entire days on site, setting out before dawn and not returning until well past midnight, their faces streaked with the light of the stars. Through this unwavering commitment to truth and perseverance, year after year, Yin Xiuzhen led her team in sustained effort for two full years.

  Effort pays off for those who are dedicated. After extensive, large-scale collection, compilation, and analysis of baseline data; thorough literature reviews; numerous consultations with experts; and repeated discussions and cross‑checking with environmental remediation contractors, Yin Xiuzhen led her team to preliminarily develop, in 2017, an integrated investigation framework encompassing surveying and mapping, geophysical exploration, hydrogeological and environmental investigations, site characterization, sampling and laboratory analysis, remediation, and pollution source tracing. This comprehensive approach has become the Shandong Institute’s core competitive advantage in river‑bed sediment assessment, playing a pivotal role in securing multiple consecutive contracts for heavy‑metal contamination surveys of river sediments. During the bidding process for a particular river‑bed sediment assessment project, faced with a barrage of challenging questions from the expert panel, Yin Xiuzhen focused on the service‑oriented details of how the investigation would inform subsequent ecological restoration. She emphasized that the precision of the investigation directly impacts the substantial costs of later remediation efforts, and that a highly professional team can better ensure reliable timelines. It was this spirit of expertise and unwavering dedication that ultimately won over both the on‑site reviewers and the client, securing the contract. “We truly clinched this project—snatching it away from our competitors—thanks to this robust investigation methodology and our solid technical capabilities,” Yin Xiuzhen said, her tone brimming with pride as she recounted the arduous journey to victory.

  Shouldering responsibility and stepping up in the face of pressure.

  The department where Yin Xiuzhen works has undergone a relatively recent transformation and has thus far engaged in only a limited number of ecological‑environmental projects. Its technical staff are predominantly young professionals born in the 1980s, resulting in comparatively modest technical expertise. Faced with these objective challenges and heavy workloads, as both deputy director and chief engineer of the department, Yin Xiuzhen has taken the lead, shouldered significant responsibilities, and demonstrated the sense of duty and commitment expected of an exemplary Communist Party member. Under her guidance, the team has steadily and methodically advanced and successfully completed multiple river‑bed sediment investigation projects.

  In 2017, Yin Xiuzhen led her team in bidding for a heavy-metal contamination survey project targeting the sediment of two rivers in Muping District, Yantai City. At the bid‑opening site for the Huanglei River project, the client for the Luojiatun River sediment‑status survey—awarded on the first day—was already seated in the project team’s office, closely monitoring progress. On one hand, the client maintained relentless oversight; on the other, the pioneering application of this sediment‑heavy‑metal‑contamination assessment approach carried potential risks associated with new technologies and emerging standards. Any error at any stage or in any data could undo all prior efforts and even result in breach of contract.

  Faced with immense dual pressures, Yin Xiuzhen remained true to her responsibilities. On the one hand, she calmly coordinated efforts to ensure the project team’s work proceeded smoothly; on the other, she led the team in relentless data analysis and report writing. Working around the clock—day and night, seven days a week—she and her team pushed forward for three consecutive months, ultimately completing the exploration report 15 days ahead of schedule.

  Ultimately, Yin Xiuzhen and her team earned the client’s highest praise through their hardworking dedication and a spirit of professionalism, expertise, and integrity, prompting the client to entrust them with the subsequent repair and acceptance work as well.

  Innovation knows no bounds; we press on with renewed vigor to stay ahead.

  Although the river‑bed sediment surveying model developed by Yin Xiuzhen and her team has achieved an accuracy of over 85% in practical applications, yielding promising results, she and her team have not slowed their pace of innovation. In the course of project implementation, Yin Xiuzhen leads her team to continuously identify and resolve issues, then reapply these findings in practice for further validation and refinement—constantly patching up and systematically upgrading the model to drive its ongoing adjustment and improvement.

  In addition, during the survey and assessment phase, Yin Xiuzhen and her team put forward several innovative and forward‑looking approaches. For example, they proposed integrating these efforts with source‑tracing studies to identify the specific stages and quantities of heavy metal emissions within the watershed, thereby quantifying the contribution of potential pollution sources to heavy metal contamination in the sediment of this river segment at the current stage. This approach aims to effectively eliminate pollution sources and ensure the success of environmentally sound sediment remediation in the target reach. These ideas and methods have received unanimous praise from environmental authorities, the implementing contractors, and expert reviewers, and have been widely recognized throughout the province’s sediment‑remediation community.

  To strengthen scientific and technological research, in 2018, building on earlier pollution surveys, Yin Xiuzhen led her team in applying for a research project that innovatively integrated isotope tracing techniques into the analysis of heavy metal contamination in riverbed sediments. Furthermore, to guide and standardize the unit’s future work on similar projects, Yin Xiuzhen also spearheaded the development of an operational guideline titled “Investigation and Source Tracing of Heavy Metal Contamination in Riverbed Sediments,” thereby establishing preliminary standards for sediment environmental surveying and source‑tracing procedures and formulating a relatively comprehensive technical framework that serves as a reference for the unit’s handling of comparable assignments.

  Innovation knows no bounds, and the pace of progress only accelerates. Today, Yin Xiuzhen—steadfastly on the front lines of projects, tirelessly shuttling between laboratories, clients, and stakeholders, and immersed in mountains of reports—remains undeterred in her pursuit of innovation. To elevate scientific and technological advancement to new heights and further strengthen Shandong Institute’s influence in the national river‑sediment market, drawing on the solid groundwork and remarkable achievements in river‑sediment exploration over recent years, she is now leading her team in actively applying to draft the national “Standard for the Investigation of Heavy Metal Contamination in River Sediments.” In this new era, where innovation has become a national strategy, this outstanding female geologist, who drives forward without being spurred on, will undoubtedly continue to deliver even more rigorous and results‑oriented work, staying true to her original aspirations and bearing her mission in mind, thus writing a new chapter of technological innovation and value creation in the field of river sediments.
