2022 was yet another extraordinary year, as the global COVID‑19 pandemic remained in full swing, with a severe and complex situation. As one of the countries along the Belt and Road, Laos is also confronting formidable challenges in its efforts to contain the virus.
As a practitioner of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Shandong Institute has been conducting geological surveys and hydro‑engineering‑environmental projects in Laos for 12 consecutive years since 2011. In October 2013, it undertook the groundwater remediation project at the Dongtai mining area in Khammouane Province, writing a bright chapter in China–Laos cooperation and development.
Life First: Fighting the Pandemic Together
The project team has consistently prioritized the health and safety of its personnel, responding with composure and meticulous planning. While ensuring the personal protection of its employees, the team has joined forces with the local government and neighboring villages to combat the pandemic, volunteering for local epidemic‑prevention patrols and maintaining 24‑hour rotating shifts alongside other project staff. These efforts have earned unanimous recognition from both partner clients and the Lao public.
Serving the People’s Livelihood, Jointly Pursuing Development
On this special day of fighting the epidemic, the project team hired more than 20 local unemployed young people and provided them with pre‑employment technical training and safety‑production education. This has helped address local employment needs in Laos, ensured the stable implementation of the project, and enabled both epidemic prevention and production operations to proceed without compromise.
Outstanding quality wins praise.
During the Spring Festival, Laos was in its dry season—also the peak period for construction. The project team remained on site, working tirelessly to address and eliminate potential hazards posed by underground dissolution cavities. This ensured the safety of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the tunnels. In particular, the remediation work at the base of the ventilation shaft successfully mitigated the risk of further dissolution, while also establishing favorable drainage conditions for future shaft construction. The outstanding results demonstrated Shandong Institute’s sophisticated technical expertise and exceptional service quality, earning unanimous praise from the client and the “Quality Construction Award” from the contractor.
