Recently, the group standard “Specification for the Investigation and Assessment of Heavy Metals in River and Lake Sediments” (T/GSC 010-2024), compiled under the guidance of the Bureau (Group) and spearheaded by our institute, was approved by the Geological Society of China and officially promulgated and put into effect as of August 12, 2024.
This standard was approved for development in April 2022, with the Bureau (Group) providing comprehensive participation in its drafting and guidance. It was spearheaded by our institute, with contributions from Mingda Ocean, Sinochem Institute of Geological Research, and Sinochem Zhejiang Institute. Through the concerted efforts of all contributors and over a period of more than two years, the standard progressed through seven key stages—project initiation, technical roadmap, discussion draft, draft for public comment, submission draft, approval draft, and final release—and was finalized in March 2024 following a thorough review of the submission draft, earning unanimous praise from the expert panel.
The Standard covers the design and review of heavy‑metal surveys in sediment, survey methodologies and requirements, environmental quality assessment of heavy metals in sediment, as well as the preparation and acceptance of survey results, thereby establishing a comprehensive set of technical standards for sediment‑borne heavy‑metal investigations and filling a critical gap in this field. Its implementation will help enhance the quality of environmental remediation of river and lake sediments, advance ecological civilization, and deliver significant social and economic benefits.
Since the project was approved, our institute has attached great importance to the development of the “Specification.” First, we strengthened organizational leadership by assigning the institute’s top leaders to head the effort and assembling a drafting team drawn from various projects, with members assigned specific tasks to carry out all aspects of the work. Second, we conducted thorough research, reviewing domestic and international practices in the assessment of river and lake sediment, summarizing cutting-edge experiences in survey techniques and requirements, environmental quality evaluation methodologies, and related approaches, and refining the specification’s technical standards to ensure systematicity, technical rigor, and practical applicability. Third, we implemented rigorous review processes, meticulously scrutinizing the draft through internal consultations and external expert reviews. Fourth, we paid close attention to detail, strictly adhering to the procedural requirements for project initiation and standard submission, thereby ensuring that the document’s structure, formatting, and other elements meet standardized criteria.
The release of this standard represents another significant achievement for our institute in the field of ecological development, providing a more robust foundation for enhancing corporate competitiveness and industry influence. Moving forward, our institute will take this “Specification” as an opportunity to strengthen industry–university–research–application collaboration, integrate the river‑bed sediment management technology system with production and operations, and expand its practical application in projects, thereby contributing to the institute’s high‑quality development.
