[Role Models Around Us] Starlight Favors Those Who Press On—Meng Linghua, a Master Craftsman at Mingda

Meng Linghua graduated in 2011 from Shandong University of Science and Technology with a master’s degree in Mineral Prospecting and Exploration. A member of the Communist Party of China, he currently serves as a senior engineer at the Tai’an Geological Branch of the Shandong Institute and is a third-level chief expert there. Since beginning his career, he has undertaken numerous major provincial and municipal fiscal projects, leading or participating in the completion of 16 map sheets for 1:50,000 regional geological and mineral surveys, as well as more than ten survey- and mineral-related projects. He has been recognized eight times as an “Advanced Worker” and a “Young Skilled Professional” by the Shandong Institute, and has received awards such as the First Prize in the Individual Category and the Advanced Individual Award for Scientific and Technological Innovation at the inaugural “Mingda Cup” Labor Skills Competition hosted by the China Chemical Geology And Mining Bureau.

Through in-depth research and synthesis, we have developed a leading domestic exploration technology for coastal zircon–titanium sand deposits.
From 2012 to 2024, as the project leader, Meng Linghua made three extended trips to Mozambique, conducting detailed exploration at six major zircon–titanium sand deposits. To date, these efforts have identified over 30 million tonnes of ilmenite and more than 3 million tonnes of zircon, thereby contributing to the Belt and Road Initiative.
In the absence of standardized procedures for coastal sand‑mineral exploration at the time, Meng Linghua leveraged his many years of specialized technical expertise to conduct in-depth, targeted research. He determined optimal engineering survey intervals for the project and developed a comprehensive set of exploration methodologies tailored to overseas coastal sand deposits, along with a robust approach for estimating the resource potential of coastal zircon–titanium sands. These contributions have provided crucial guidance for the exploration and development of coastal sand‑mineral deposits, as well as for the formulation of relevant standards. Following evaluation by professional review bodies, his coastal zircon–titanium sand‑mineral exploration techniques were recognized as being at an advanced domestic level, positioning the Shandong Institute at the forefront of the industry in this field abroad. Capitalizing on these technological advantages, the institute has successively undertaken seven exploration and appraisal projects for coastal zircon–titanium sand deposits in Mozambique. The outcomes of these projects have been honored with numerous awards, including the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the First Prize for Science and Technology in Land and Resources from Shandong Province, the First Prize for Science and Technology from the China National Bureau of Coal Geology, the Special Award for High‑Quality Geological Reports at the 17th Session of the China National Coal Industry Association, and the Special Award for High‑Quality Geological Reports at the 20th Session of the same association.
Meticulous and rigorous, achieving a series of groundbreaking scientific and technological advances in geology.
From 2015 to 2018, Meng Linghua served as both project leader and technical director, overseeing Shandong Institute’s first regional geological survey project undertaken in Xinjiang—the “1:50,000 Four‑Sheet Regional Geological Survey of the Yamat Area, Wenquan County, Xinjiang.” The study area is located along the China–Kazakhstan border in the Western Tianshan Mountains, with a unique geographical setting and elevations exceeding 4,000 meters. During the project, Meng Linghua led his team to thoroughly examine every outcrop across a 1,200‑square‑kilometer region, leaving no unusual geological feature uninvestigated. To ensure timely progress, he conducted fieldwork during the day and voluntarily worked late into the night to prepare the final report, constantly seeking ways to enhance efficiency. The project yielded a series of significant new findings in stratigraphy, intrusive rocks, volcanic rocks, metamorphic rocks, structural geology, and mineral resources, resulting in the publication of 12 peer‑reviewed papers. It was subsequently awarded the Second Prize in the 19th Quality Geological Report Competition of the China National Coal Industry Association and the Third Prize of the Shandong Provincial Natural Resources Science and Technology Award.
In addition, the “Urban Geological Survey of Taian City, Shandong Province,” led by Meng Linghua as project director, marked the first urban geological survey undertaken by the Shandong Institute. During the project’s implementation, Meng Linghua and his team thoroughly characterized the shallow subsurface geology—down to 100 meters—along with underground space, geological resources, and environmental conditions. They conducted a comprehensive environmental quality assessment and evaluated the suitability for underground space development and the resource–environment carrying capacity, thereby providing robust geological support for the city’s green, intensive, and smart development. Building on this work, the project secured one utility‑model patent and published seven scientific papers, including one indexed in EI and four in Chinese core journals, while actively advancing innovations in the theories, technologies, and methodologies of urban geological surveys on the piedmont alluvial–proluvial sloping plain. At the same time, the project embraced the principles of “integrated exploration” and “green exploration,” developing a green exploration technical framework tailored to urban settings. This approach was recognized as a provincial-level demonstration project for green exploration in Shandong, filling a critical gap within the institute and contributing significantly to the full-scale implementation of green exploration across the province. The project’s achievements have been honored with multiple awards, including the Bureau (Group) Special Prize for Geological Science and Technology Progress, the Third Prize of Shandong Province for Natural Resources Science and Technology, and the Second Prize of the China Chemical Mining Science and Technology Award.

Meng Linghua not only possesses extensive practical experience in regional geological surveys, urban geological surveys, and mineral exploration, with a comprehensive grasp of professional knowledge and a solid theoretical foundation, but also places great emphasis on enhancing and applying research outcomes, demonstrating profound academic accomplishments. He has successively won the Outstanding Paper Award at the 6th, 7th, and 8th Youth Geological Science and Technology Academic Forums hosted by the China Chemical Geology And Mining Bureau.
To date, Meng Linghua has published 27 professional academic papers based on his projects, including one EI‑indexed paper and eight papers in Chinese core journals, all as first author. He has received numerous awards, such as the First Prize of Shandong Province’s Science and Technology for Land and Resources (ranked 5th), the First Prize of the China Coal Geology Bureau’s Science and Technology Award (ranked 5th), the Third Prize of Shandong Province’s Science and Technology for Land and Resources (ranked 10th), the Second Prize for High‑Quality Professional Geological Reports from the China National Coal Industry Association (ranked 2nd), the Third Prize of Shandong Province’s Science and Technology for Natural Resources (ranked 3rd), the Special Prize for High‑Quality Geological Reports from the China National Coal Industry Association (ranked 1st), the Third Prize of Shandong Province’s Science and Technology for Natural Resources (ranked 1st), the Second Prize of Chemical Mining Science and Technology (ranked 2nd), and the Special Prize for Geological Science and Technology Progress from the China Chemical Geology And Mining Bureau (ranked 1st).
