Seeking the “lost” karst carbon sink to support the ambitious “dual carbon” goals.


To thoroughly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping’s strategic decisions on the “dual carbon” goals, the Geological Survey Branch of our institute has taken proactive measures, seized opportunities, and actively mobilized its technical experts to submit and carry out the project titled “Investigation and Assessment of Carbon Sink Potential in Typical Karst Areas of Jinan City.”

Since the project’s inception, the project team has conducted field surveys, monitoring, and sampling‑analysis activities in a typical karst area of Jinan City. They have completed a 1,900 km² geological survey of karst carbon sinks, collected and analyzed a total of 122 sets of rock, soil, and hydrogeochemical samples, carried out 50 dissolution‑rate experiments on carbonate rocks, measured CO₂ concentrations at 51 sites, conducted 16 investigations of CO₂ exchange fluxes at the water–air interface, performed 11 210Pb isotopic dating analyses of sedimentation rates, collected and identified aquatic biological samples from three locations, and monitored surface and groundwater at two sites. The project has successfully passed the field acceptance and the review of its final report, both organized by the Jinan Municipal Bureau of Natural Resources and Planning.

Through the implementation of this project, we investigated the dynamic processes governing the transfer, transformation, and deposition of inorganic carbon generated by the weathering and dissolution of carbonate rocks in the karst region of Jinan. We analyzed the influence of various environmental factors on the carbon cycle associated with karst processes, examined the carbon source–sink dynamics, and quantified the carbon sink flux in Jinan’s karst area. Furthermore, leveraging a GIS platform, we conducted an assessment of carbon‑sink potential, thereby providing a scientific basis for research on the carbon cycle in Jinan and for informed government decision‑making.

The successful implementation of this project will lay a solid theoretical and practical foundation for future investigations and assessments of karst carbon sinks in Jinan City and throughout the North China region, thereby contributing the geological expertise and insights of Sinochem Shandong Institute to the achievement of the “dual carbon” goals.
