The octogenarian Lü Mingpu clinched three gold medals and one silver at the Chinese Masters Athletics Championships.

At the 2023 Chinese Athletics Masters Championships (Qingdao), which concluded on October 29, our institute’s 89-year-old retired employee, Lü Mingpu, with silver hair and a steadfast heart, remained as youthful as ever. In his advanced years, he once again showcased his remarkable prowess. With the men’s 85+ age group 4×100-meter relay gold medal added to his tally, Lü Mingpu brought his participation in this event to a triumphant close, finishing with an outstanding record of three golds and one silver.

The China Athletics Masters Championship, formerly known as the National Veterans Athletics Championships, has long enjoyed high participation, broad reach, and enthusiastic support. This year’s event in Qingdao drew 42 teams from across the country, with nearly 500 athletes and officials taking part. As a star athlete for the Jinan Masters team, Lü Mingpu shattered records and claimed three gold medals. In the men’s 85‑plus age group 100‑meter final, he clocked an impressive 19.73 seconds, breaking the meet record of 24.20 seconds. In the 4×100‑meter relay, he set a new meet record of 1:25.41, eclipsing the previous Chinese masters mark of 1:26.43 and also setting a new Asian masters record. Ultimately, he swept the board, winning gold in the men’s 85‑plus 100 meters, the 4×100‑meter relay, and the 4×400‑meter relay, while earning a silver medal in the triple jump.

With lofty aspirations in geological exploration, he has persevered tirelessly and achieved lasting success. Lü Mingpu began his career in 1956 and, prior to retirement, held positions such as deputy team leader at the Shandong Provincial Chemical Mining Geological Exploration Team—one of our institute’s predecessors—and chairman of the trade union at the Shandong Provincial Chemical Geology Survey Institute. As a retired veteran Party member, he always keeps his Party identity firmly in mind, maintains youthful ideals in his thinking, and puts his original aspiration into practice through concrete actions. “I’ve loved sports since I was young—I can never sit still. I enjoy track and field and badminton, and I’m particularly good at sprinting.” At the age of 89, Mr. Lü has repeatedly participated in various competitions for middle-aged and elderly athletes at the provincial, municipal, national, and even Asian levels. Just a few months ago, he took part—as the oldest competitor—in the 35th National Invitational Badminton Tournament for Middle-Aged and Elderly Players in 2023, achieving outstanding results. He has also been honored multiple times, receiving titles such as “Leader in Health and Fitness” and “Advanced Individual in Senior Sports” from the Provincial Government Organs’ Senior Citizens’ Sports Association, “Healthy Elderly Person of Shandong” from the Shandong Provincial Health Commission, and “Health Star” from the China Chemical Geology And Mining Bureau, thereby showcasing the vigorous spirit of our institute’s retired employees: staying true to their original aspirations, maintaining a positive outlook, striving for progress, and continuing to contribute in their later years.
