China has released global reserve assessment data for 13 mineral resources.

On July 8, the Global Mineral Resources Strategic Research Center of the China Geological Survey under the Ministry of Natural Resources released the “Global Mineral Resource Reserves Assessment Report 2023.” Building on the inaugural “Global Assessment Report on Lithium, Cobalt, Nickel, Tin, and Potash Reserves” published in 2021, this report adds eight additional minerals—iron, manganese, chromium, copper, aluminum, lead, zinc, and phosphorus—and updates the data for lithium, cobalt, nickel, tin, and potash. It provides a comprehensive and objective assessment of global reserves for these 13 mineral commodities as of the end of 2021.

The report compiles data on more than 20,000 mining projects across 150 countries worldwide and, using a unified standard, benchmarks and appropriately adjusts global reserve estimates from different systems as well as officially reported reserves in certain nations, thereby producing reliable and credible assessments of global mineral resource reserves. According to the report’s findings, global iron ore reserves stand at 164.3 billion tonnes, with resources totaling 582.8 billion tonnes; manganese ore reserves amount to 2.034 billion tonnes, with resources of 8.073 billion tonnes; chromite reserves are 2.042 billion tonnes, with resources of 4.301 billion tonnes; copper ore reserves total 821.63 million tonnes, with resources of 1,919.61 million tonnes; bauxite reserves reach 15.3 billion tonnes, with resources of 43.2 billion tonnes; lead ore reserves are 75.47 million tonnes, with resources of 274.66 million tonnes; zinc ore reserves amount to 225.67 million tonnes, with resources of 635.78 million tonnes; nickel ore reserves stand at 94.14 million tonnes, with resources of 280.63 million tonnes; tin ore reserves total 3.27 million tonnes, with resources of 10.02 million tonnes; cobalt ore reserves are 6.68 million tonnes, with resources of 27.80 million tonnes; lithium ore reserves (expressed in lithium carbonate equivalent) amount to 134.88 million tonnes, with resources of 388.52 million tonnes; phosphate rock reserves reach 34 billion tonnes, with resources of 106.8 billion tonnes; and potash (expressed in potassium chloride equivalent) reserves total 14.9 billion tonnes, with resources of 69 billion tonnes.

The report indicates that the world boasts abundant reserves of iron, manganese, chromium, aluminum, phosphorus, potash, and lithium, while the security of supplies for tin, lead, zinc, nickel, cobalt, and copper remains relatively limited. China’s reserves of these 13 minerals vary significantly in their global share: tin, lead, zinc, and manganese each account for more than 10% of global reserves, classifying them as strategically advantageous resources; by contrast, the remaining nine minerals have much lower global reserve shares, rendering them scarce.

The release of this report further enriches China’s globally recognized reserve‑assessment framework, which is based on domestically developed intellectual property, and contributes Chinese wisdom and expertise to advancing international mining cooperation and building a global community of shared future in the mining sector. According to reports, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the China Geological Survey plans to complete global reserve assessments for 40 major mineral commodities, issue these assessments on a regular, dynamic basis, and provide authoritative data on global mineral reserves.
