The world’s first 100-megawatt-class standalone energy storage power station, in which the geotechnical engineering company participated, has officially been put into operation.

Recently, China Central Television’s News Channel reported that the Laiwu Huaneng 100-megawatt‑class distributed‑control grid‑connected energy storage power station has officially begun operations. The project is one of Shandong Province’s 2022 energy storage demonstration projects and represents the world’s first 100‑megawatt‑class energy storage facility. Developed in-house by Huaneng, it features modular energy storage units and an advanced management system; a single charge can store 200,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, enough to meet the daily power needs of approximately 30,000 households. Following its commissioning, the plant will be integrated into Shandong Grid’s unified dispatch and management framework, primarily providing services such as provincial ancillary power, grid peak‑shaving, and energy storage capacity leasing. It is expected to accommodate roughly 100 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually, reduce coal consumption by about 31,000 tons, and help ensure the stable operation of Shandong’s power grid, enhance the comprehensive utilization of renewable energy resources, and support the development of a new‑type power system.

This project is being undertaken by the Geotechnical Engineering Company, which has established a long-term partnership with China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. Its business scope spans multiple sectors, including photovoltaic power, power stations, energy storage, overlying mineral resources, and surveying and mapping. In recent years, all staff members of the Geotechnical Engineering Company have consistently upheld the “Three Glories and Four Special Qualities” spirit of geological surveyors, striving to expand market opportunities and strengthen technical capabilities. Drawing inspiration from the exemplary deeds of successive generations of the “Heroic Geological Team”—who braved rugged terrain, endured harsh conditions, and tackled formidable challenges—the company has further enhanced its capacity for hard work and practical action, continuously broadened its service offerings, and elevated its technical standards. By fulfilling its mission and responsibilities in supporting national ecological civilization, serving national strategies, and ensuring energy security, the company contributes its strength to the high-quality development of our institute, embodying a spirit of courageously scaling new heights.
