Recently, the Mineral Exploration Branch of our institute successfully won the bid for the “Investigation and Assessment Project on Ecological Damage and Pollution at Historically Abandoned Mines in the Yellow River Basin (Shandong Section), Lot 7.”
The “Survey and Assessment Project on Ecological Damage and Pollution Caused by Historically Abandoned Mines in the Yellow River Basin (Shandong Section)” won by our institute is primarily organized and implemented by the Shandong Provincial Center for Territorial Spatial Ecological Restoration. The project focuses on abandoned mines within the counties of the Yellow River Basin that were previously subject to mining activities, have since been closed, and are now under government responsibility for ecological restoration and pollution remediation. It aims to ascertain the current status of ecological degradation and environmental contamination in these mining areas, conduct both category-specific and comprehensive assessments of these issues, establish a database of survey and assessment results, and produce a report on the ecological damage and pollution associated with historically abandoned mines in the Yellow River Basin, along with relevant maps and charts. These outputs will provide a scientific basis for the planned implementation of ecological restoration and pollution control measures for historically abandoned mines in the Yellow River Basin.
Ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin constitute a major national strategy. General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly chaired symposiums on these issues, including those on deepening efforts to advance ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin, and delivered important speeches, outlining a grand vision and charting a clear course for this endeavor. The report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China designated “promoting ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin” as a key component of coordinated regional development, setting forth specific requirements and making concrete arrangements for advancing high-quality development and fostering harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. This year, the General Offices of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration jointly issued the “Notice on Organizing and Conducting Investigations and Evaluations of Ecological Damage and Pollution at Legacy Mines in the Yellow River Basin,” calling on the nine provinces and autonomous regions along the Yellow River to carry out such investigations and assessments.
This successful bid marks the first time our Institute’s Mineral Exploration Branch has undertaken work centered on ecological protection and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin. Seizing this opportunity, we will align closely with national development strategies and policy directives, deepen our market engagement, capitalize on emerging opportunities, and fully leverage our expertise in mineral exploration to further integrate into the efforts supporting ecological conservation and high‑quality development in the Yellow River Basin.
