The group’s research team has found that cadmium isotopes can be used to trace the sources of heavy metal contamination in sediment.


  Heavy metals are among the most toxic and ecologically harmful pollutants in the environment. They can enter surface waters through atmospheric deposition, wastewater discharge, stormwater runoff, flood scouring, and agricultural drainage, subsequently undergoing complex physical, chemical, biological, and sedimentary processes that lead to their accumulation in bottom sediments. This poses serious risks to human health and the environment; therefore, addressing heavy-metal contamination in aquatic ecosystems is imperative. Cutting off pollution sources is key to effective remediation; however, for water bodies with unclear or multiple potential composite pollution sources, conventional analytical approaches often struggle to pinpoint the exact origins of contamination.

  In response to the aforementioned issues, Yin Xiuzhen, a third‑level chief expert at the Group (Bureau), led a project team in collaboration with the Institute of Resource Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Employing non‑traditional stable isotope geochemical tracing methods, the researchers demonstrated that cadmium isotopes can serve as an effective geochemical tracer for identifying the sources of cadmium in low‑cadmium‑contaminated environments, such as riverbed sediments. This study was published in the top-tier environmental journal Science of the Total Environment, which has an impact factor of 7.963, and is expected to play a positive role in tracing the origins of water‑environment pollution and enhancing the effectiveness of measures to safeguard aquatic ecosystems.
